Tried to jump a friends battery, and my idiot friend hooked up the jumper cables backwards. If it's not obvious, please include a detailed description of what the problem is or what the thing in the picture does/is supposed to do. No memes or rage . The battery was bad and was the only problem until the customer attempted to jump start it and hooked the cables up backwards. It ended up melting. 28 May Hooked up the jumper cables the wrong hookuptime.me and smoke - posted in 95 WD21 Pathfinders: Hi everyone, I made a very dumb mistake this afternoon with my V6 D21 The battery is dead so I had to jump start the truck, and I hooked up the positive and negative backwards. The second that.
Log In Remember Me? My neighbors Grandson accidentally hooked up the jumpers cables backward on one end. They were trying to jump a escort with another vehicle.
The escort was the one with the dead battery. The side check this out was hooked up wrong was on the escort side. They even let it run for about five What Happens If I Hook Up Jumper Cables Backwards and think they tried to start the escort. Would this of fried the alternator on one or both vehicles. Maybe blew a fuse?
At least I did not have anything to do with it. The Grandson did say he smelled something burning. The escort is on a charger now and seems to be charging ok as far as I can tell. His Grandpa is out with the other car. A friend of a friend just did the same last week on a geo car. The geo blew the main fuse but the fuse got so hot it melted the fuse into the fuse box. They had to pry and rip the fuse out. They were able to get a new fuse in but the fuse box was so deformed they had to bend the terminals around the fuse.
Turned the key started right up, and alternator and computer seem fine. There also may be a main fuseable link somewhere. Look twice connect once. If the "jumped" battery is totally drained you can reverse charge the battery with little damage depending on how much you let it charge that way, that is why I try to get the "jumped" car started asap, and be ready to disconect cables when it does start.
Thanks for the info.
Just tested the Grandpa's car and is putting out 14vdc while running. Guess he did not do any damage to his car. Brought the battery over to my house and is on a charger. IDK but the neighbor thinks I'm some kind of mechanic. He's always asking me to fix stuff.
Heard a story a few years ago about a guy who blew a fuse, the old round type.
Couldnt find a fuse in the glove box, but did find a 22 long shell. Driving down the road the round heated up because a shorted wire and blew a hole in his knee cap. I'm not even sure if I should hook back up the battery even if it takes a good charge. Talked to the Grandson again and he confirmed that he smelled a burning smell and hooked up one end wrong.
Anything is possible but I think I'll check things out more before hooking up the battery. Turns out the main amp fuse blew. Replaced that and got the escort started now the alternator is not putting out anything. Guess it probably fried when they hooked up the jumper cables wrong. All the fuses are good. I'll probably pull the alternator off after the first and get it tested.
Connecting the jumper cables the wrong way might actually damage your vehicle. Are the fuseable links available from Nissan? I'm not sure the current passed through the flyback diode would compare with the stall current for the starter motor. Lucky we didn't burn!
This use to be my wives car and sold it to the neighbor and still working on the darn thing. It has k on the clock and is not very reliable anymore. Originally Posted by creativecars1.

Ended up frying the fuel lines and squirting gas all over me. Lucky we didn't burn! That alternator's diodes are going to be toast, as well as the regulator. Everything's solid state, and doesn't take well to reversed currents. Find all posts by SpringerPop.
The alternator was bad. Replaced it and now the charging system is working again. BLIS and Radar detectors.
Lucky we didn't burn! This includes Craigslist, Ebay, Facebook sale groups, etc. Had this happen to me once, the lady I was trying to jump had her cables crossed on her end. Guess he did not do any damage to his car.
