The technique depends on the existence in nature of isotopes of carbon, which allow the dating of organic materials up to years old or more. The relative abundance of these isotopes can be detected with techniques such as mass spectrometry and used as a kind of atomic clock to tell the age of carbon- rich. Also, samples taken a few feet apart can give ages that differ by many hundreds of millions of years. However, local eruptions of volcanoes or other events that give off large amounts of carbon dioxide can reduce local concentrations of carbon and give inaccurate dates. As the magma chamber is depleted in daughter products, subsequent lava flows and ash beds would have younger dates.
